PNG - Group One: Illinois Veterans History Project + Virtual Reality

Event Date:
Mar 12 2018 - 3:00pm

Who: All youth, ages 11 through 14, are welcome to participate, including those that are home-schooled. This "group" is limited to 10 participants. Registration is required.

What: A FREE, unique technology experience that includes the outstanding Illinois History Project, Virtual and Augmented Reality, and 3-D Design and Printing.

Where: LaSalle Public Library, LaSalle & IVCC, Oglesby.

When: Participants attend one two-hour session per week and meet a total of eight times.  Participants will work on the Illinois Veterans History Project; some participants will also work on Virtual/Augmented Reality, while others work on 3D design and printing.  One group will meet on Mondays, the other group, on Thursdays. Because of varying school dismissal times and travel times to the Library or IVCC, students need to be at either location between 3:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. to begin class time promptly at 4:00 p.m.  The program includes a free field trip where participants will use the technologies to create a project.

Group One
Illinois Veterans History Project and 360 Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality
Mondays: 2/26, 3/5, 3/12, 3/19, 4/9, 4/16, 4/23, and 4/30.
Classes will not meet on 2/19 or 4/2.

Why: It's fun! It's a way to connect to the past and honor Veterans. It's a way to learn a few of today's exciting technologies. It's an opportunity to use the learning as a foundation for emerging technologies.  We are delighted to be collaborating with Illinois Valley Community College faculty and resources to offer youth exceptional STEM learning.

How: For complete details about this program, please contact Cristy Stupegia, Library Director at 815-223-2341. Project Next Generation is the vision of Illinois Secretary of State, Jesse White. Its focus is for public libraries to provide after-school programming that allows youth to learn emerging technologies, and participate in an important Illinois humanities project via adult mentors. In addition to technical knowledge, the funded grant programs also strive to help participating youth develop self-confidence and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.

Funding for Project Next Generation was awarded by the Illinois State Library, a Department of the Office of the Secretary of State, Jesse White, using funds provided by the U.S Institute of Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).
