Running Silent, Running Deep: The American Submarine War

Event Date:
Aug 4 2015 - 6:00pm

Join us on August 4th, at 6:00 p.m when author and historian, Ed Finch presents "Running Silent, Running Deep".

By early months of 1945, the United States Navy Pacific submarine fleet had become a sharply honed weapon of war.  The American "Silent Service" was inflicting losses on the Imperial Japanee navy and merchant fleet out of proportion to both the size and cost of America's investment.  But in the first years of the war, American submarines did not perform up to even pre-war expectations.

Learn more about the causes of early poor performances and the remedies that led to an eventual triumph by the Silent Service, when author and historian, Ed Finch presents this illuminating program.  The American submarine epitomized the highly mechanized nature of World War II.  While the technology itself was astonishing, so, too, were those personnel on board and in command.

Finch will share insights and personal glimpses of these men by reading passages from memoirs of several American submariners.

This program is free and open to the public, and is made possible through funding from the Alwin C. Carus Trust.  The Library is located at 305 Marquette Street, LaSalle,  IL and is American's with Disabilities Act compliant and welcoming.  If you wish to attend and have special needs because of a disability, please contact Donna Blomquist at 815-223-2341 to discuss arrangements.
